Natalie Wood: LA Police Reopen Actress' Death Inquiry

Homicide detectives have re-opened their investigation of Natalie Wood's death nearly 30 years after the actress drowned in the waters off Southern California in one of Hollywood's most enduring mysteries. Natalie Wood, one of the most glamorous actresses of her generation, was found drowned in the waters off Southern California after a night of partying on the yacht she owned with actor husband Robert Wagner.

They say before Natalie disappeared from the boat, she was drinking and taking Quaaludes with her husband, Robert Wagner and actor Christopher Walken. On March 11, 2010 Wood's sister Lana stated that she would ask that the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reopen the case of her death.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca told the Los Angeles Times that homicide detectives want to talk to Dennis Davern, former captain of yacht The Splendour, based on a statement he made recounting the case on its 30th anniversary.

Wood drowned after a night of partying with husband Robert Wagner and Brainstorm co-star Christopher Walken on the couple's yacht anchored off Santa Catalina Island. Her death was ruled an accident and it was determined that she had been drinking before her death. The office wrote that Wood was "possibly attempting to board the dinghy and had fallen into the water, striking her face."

According to The Times, a law enforcement source also said that the department recently received a letter from an unidentified "third party", claiming the captain had "new recollections" about the case. A news conference on Friday is expected to shed further light on the information that led Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to reopen the case.

"Recently sheriff's homicide investigators were contacted by persons who stated they had additional information about the Natalie Wood Wagner drowning," the department said. The office wrote that Wood was "possibly attempting to board the dinghy and had fallen into the water, striking her face."

According to police reports, her body was found floating in a cove on Catalina Island about a mile away from the yacht. She was wearing a long nightgown, socks, and a down jacket. According to CNN, the autopsy report said Wood had two dozen bruises on her body, including a facial abrasion on her left cheek and bruises on her arms.
