BOCHUM, Germany (AP) — Australia kept alive its
chances to reach the quarterfinals of the
Women’s World Cup by beating Equatorial Guinea
3-2 on Sunday in a game that will be remembered
for a penalty that wasn’t called.
AUSTRALIA seized control of their destiny at the women's football World Cup with a 3-2 win over
Africa's Equatorial Guinea, in Bochum, Germany on Sunday.
The victory lifted Australia to three points from two games, alongside Brazil and Norway, who were
scheduled to play early Monday morning (AEST).
The Matildas play Norway in their final group game on Thursday morning (AEST).
The move comes after Equatorial Guinea were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player.
World football’s governing body suspended Equatorial Guinea striker Jade Boho Sayo for two months
over apparent nationality issues.
Equatorial Guinea beat Cameroon 2-0 on aggregate in the second round of qualifying.
She previously had played for Spain's under-19 team and played for Equatorial Guinea in its World
Cup and Olympic qualifying campaigns.
Nigeria issued a statement earlier this week saying it had been told by FIFA that its upcoming
opponent had been changed from Equatorial Guinea to Cameroon, which Guinea had beaten in the
second round of qualifying.
