Graves Disease

"
I was diagnosed with Graves' disease about three years ago, but it really hasn't slowed me down at all," Elliott said in a written statement.

Elliott tells People, she was diagnosed with the disease in 2008 -- and has been receiving radiation treatment to help alleviate symptoms like dizzy spells,

lumps in her throat, mood swings, hair loss, and bulging eyes. Missy adds, "You live with it for the rest of your life."

The disease which is common in women, can develop at any age, and can affect your metabolism and physical appearance.

It's similar to some other things where the body kind of turns on itself," said Holly Avery, Megan's mom. "It was real frightening.

"I'm 30 pounds lighter because I've been exercising," she explained. "My thyroid is functioning, so I haven't had to take medication in about nine months.

Graves' disease is rarely life-threatening. Although it may develop at any age and in either men or women, Graves' disease is more common in women and usually begins after age 20.
