This weekend, Super 8 arrived with neither a whimper nor a bang. After months of hype, the trumped-up J.J. Abrams-Steven Spielberg production was rather uneventful.
With the top two films raking in far more than even the most optimistic forecasters had envisaged,
the box office resumed its summer march forward, erasing a little more of the shortfall from
2010. After two weeks of coming in behind year-ago revenue,
Bad Teacher , which earned about $31 million. Most forecasters had predicted it would earn
around $25 million. With both films performing so strongly,
Cars 2” also generated the fourth highest-grossing June opening and the fifth
highest-grossing opening weekend for a Pixar movie.
