The missing five-year-old son of country singer Mindy McCready was found hiding in a closet with his mother in Arkansas, Deputy U.S. Marshall David Rahbany said on Saturday.
Earlier Friday, Mindy McCready's ex spoke out about his fear for the safety of their 5-year-old son, Zander, after she failed to take him home after picking him up from his grandfather's for a visit. Around 8 p.m. Friday, police took her son, Zander, from his mother at a lake home owned by McCready's boyfriend in Heber Springs, Arkansas, according to the Cleburne County Sheriff.
Florida Department of Children and Families spokeswoman Terri Durdaller said in an email Friday night that her agency was working with Arkansas state officials to bring the boy back to his legal guardian in Florida, his maternal grandmother. Officials say he's safe and in good health. The troubled artist - who is pregnant with twins - had openly refused this week to return five-year old Zander to the care of her mother in Florida, claiming she was set on protecting the child, even if it resulted in jail time.
Until recently, the boy has been living with Mindy McCready's mother and stepfather, Gayle and Michael Inge, who have legal custody. The singer, who has fought a public battle against drug addiction, has visitation rights.
Rahbany, the chief deputy U.S. marshal for eastern Arkansas, said officials believed that McCready, 36, and Zander might be at the home of her boyfriend David Wilson in Heber Springs. Gayle Inge, Zander's grandmother and McCready's mother, was tearful when she talked about the news by phone Friday night with The Associated Press.
"I'm real excited that he's safe," she said. "But I can't explain what this is like. We feel for Mindy and we feel for Zander." McCready has spent the past few years turning her life around, and she's been fighting for custody of her son.
