Philippines Storm And Floods in Kill Nearly 200

MANILA, Philippines, Dec 15: A typhoon has hit the southern Philippines, triggering flash floods and landslides that killed nearly 180 people and forced about 100,000 from their homes, government and army officials said on Saturday.

Some of the dead were swept out at sea in the worst-hit coastal cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in the Mindanao region, which is unaccustomed to the cyclones that are common elsewhere in the archipelago nation. Many of the victims were asleep when it struck Mindanao island, killing many in Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro.

Residents are rescued by volunteers Saturday following a flash flood that inundated Cagayan de Oro city, Philippines.

Tens of thousands of people have fled to higher ground, the authorities say. The provinces of Compostela Valley and Zamboanga del Norte were also hit, said Benito Ramos, chairman of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Army spokesman Colonel Leopoldo Galon said emergency workers had recovered 97 bodies, most of them children, who drowned in floods in Cagayan de Oro City. Large areas were left without power and some domestic flights were cancelled as winds of up to 90 km/h (55mph) swept across the island.

About 400 people are missing after the storm, which is called Sendong locally. More than 2,000 have been rescued, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines. In Iligan, Lawrence Cruz, the city's mayor, described rampaging floodwaters from swollen rivers that swamped at least 10 villages on the city's outskirts.
Ayi Hernandez, a former congressman, said he and his family were resting in their home late Friday when they heard a loud "swooshing sound" and water quickly rose ankle deep inside his home. He decided to evacuate to a neighbor's two-story house.

The floodwaters were waist-high in some neighborhoods that do not usually experience flooding. Scores of residents escaped the floods by climbing onto the roofs of their homes, Cruz said. The national disaster agency said five miners were also buried in a landslide.

Social networking site Facebook's latest service Timeline has been globally rolled out. It's been talked about for what feels like ages, but as of Thursday (Dec. 15) any Facebook user can switch his or her profile page to the fancy new Timeline layout.

There's a new place to put a banner image that stretches nicely across the top of your profile, replacing the often awkward vertical spot where most people used to put a photo of themselves. Timeline was announced by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the f8 conference in September.

The ‘Activity Log’ lets Facebook users review all of the stuff they have posted on the site – such as photos or status updates. Only the user can see their ‘Activity Log’ and from this the user can decide what stuff to show and hide on their Timeline.

3. Sharing life stories

Users can fill out the Timeline with special moments from their lives. They need to click on ‘life event’ and then can add their baby photos, first car, graduation, engagement, wedding, new house, baby being born – or anything else.

4. Highlighting special moments and hiding the ones people would rather forget:

For extra special moments, Facebook users can highlight them on their timeline by clicking on the star to make them extra big. Or they can remove anything they don't want to appear on their Timeline by clicking the pencil icon and selecting hide or delete.

5. Control privacy post by post

Change the privacy of anything on the Timeline by clicking on the dropdown next to any post. Members can choose the audience they want to see anything - ¬some things they can share publicly while other things they may only want to share with close friends.

6. Add apps to your Timeline

Facebook users can now tell a more complete story of who they are by adding new experiences to the Timeline profile – such as music they are listening to or films they are watching via applications.

'The Protestor' is Time Magazine’s 2011 'Person of the Year'

"The Protester" has been named Time's "Person of the Year" for 2011.

The magazine annually honors the individual or group it deems the most influential that year, and thanks to protests that spread across Europe, the Middle East and the US in 2011, it chose the anonymous "Protester" for the coveted title.

Time's "Person of the Year" is the person or thing that the magazine feels has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year, for good or for ill. Last year, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg got the honour. U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke received the honor in 2009. The 2008 winner was then-President-elect Barack Obama.

Time said it is recognizing protesters because they are "redefining people power" around the world. "Is there a global tipping point for frustration? Everywhere, it seems, people said they'd had enough," Time Editor Rick Stengel said in a statement.

Elizabeth Taylor's jewelry collection fetched a record-setting $115 million — including more than $11.8 million for a pearl necklace and more than $8.8 million for a diamond ring given to her by Richard Burton — at an auction of gems and other memorabilia amassed by the late actress.

Christie's sale of 80 items had been estimated to raise about $20m (£13m), but took more than double the record for a single collection. The highlight was a necklace featuring a 16th Century pearl which sold for $11.8m (£7.6m), a record for the gem. The actress' famous 33.19-carat diamond ring, given to her by Richard Burton, also sold for $8.8m (£5.7m).

Burton, who married Taylor twice, had bought the pearl in 1969 at auction for $37,000, and Taylor, who died in March at age 79, commissioned Cartier to design a ruby-and-diamond necklace mount. It had been estimated to sell for $2 million to $3 million.

The ring, estimated to sell for $2.5 million to $3.5 million, was included in a collection of Taylor's necklaces, earrings, pendants and rings and other gems that went on sale Tuesday night at Christie's in New York. Other highlights included the Taj Mahal diamond, another gift from Burton marking Dame Elizabeth's 40th birthday, which sold for $8.8m (£5.7m), a record for an Indian jewel.

The four-hour sale broke the record for a single-owner jewelry collection before the halfway mark. A total six world records for jewellery at auction were broken, including that for pearl jewellery, price per carat of a D colour diamond and for the price achieved for Indian jewellery. Nordine Amrani Attacks In Belgian City Leaves 5 Dead, 122 Wounded

A lone attacker armed with guns and explosives killed at least three people and injured scores more before taking his own life in the Belgian city of Liège on Tuesday. In a terrifying resemblance to the Breivik massacre in the summer, a Belgian man goes on a shooting spree as youth exit their schools, killing a baby and several others.

It was not immediately clear what motivated the attack in the busy Place Saint-Lambert square, the central entry point to downtown shopping streets in the city in eastern Belgium. The attack prompted hundreds of shoppers to stampede down old city streets, fleeing explosions and bullets.

On Tuesday a Liege hospital announced that a 17-month-old girl had become the fourth victim of the shooting spree, after two teenage boys and a 75-year-old woman were earlier confirmed killed. Officials said at least 120 others were also wounded in the attack, which occurred 90km east of Brussels. Some 52 people were treated for injuries by medics at a field hospital set up near the scene, the prosecutor said, while others went to hospitals in the area.

Police in Belgium have discovered a woman's body at the home of a gunman who went on the rampage in the city of Liege, killing four people and himself.

"It was found in a shed which he used, notably to grow cannabis," Liege's prosecutor general, Cedric Visart de Bocarme, told Belgian public radio, RTBF. The authorities are trying to determine what motivated Mr Amrani to go on his killing spree.

Mobile phone videos taken in the aftermath of the attack showed a dozen people lying on the ground covered in blood. The attacker threw several explosive devices – either heavy-duty firecrackers or grenades – then opened fire on the crowd in at least two bursts, witnesses said.

Public prosecutor Daniele Reynders was to address questions ranging from the killer's fate to news of victims in a critical condition, or how closely Belgian authorities had followed Amrani during a year under caretaker government, at a 9:00 am Liege press conference.

Lohan, who squeezed in the Playboy shoot between court dates, community service obligations and everything else she's been required to do to maintain her freedom, let alone her career, has not commented on the presumably flattering turn of events.

According to the Daily Mail, Lindsay's shoot was inspired by celebrity photographer Tom Kelley's nude pictorial of Marilyn Monroe, shot in 1949 for a calendar before featuring in the first edition of Playboy in 1953. One of Lohan's poses is in very similar style to this one of Monroe.

(”I’m not one to gossip,” Phaedra said at one point, disingenuously.) There was a fashion show at the Atlanta botanical gardens which meant that the Housewives were finally going to see Cynthia in her element. Sadly, her element is butchering names and issuing weary corrections. After last night's episode Cynthia probably just halved her speaking-engagement fee. Meanwhile, at the International Interior Design Fashion Show, Cynthia was getting ready to be the emcee, and some of the girls were coming to watch.

Phaedra and Apollo showed up, because they've made amends with Peter (although I couldn't help but notice that Peter wasn't really seen anywhere near Apollo throughout the whole thing, but that's another story). Kandi gives her mom a fancy drag queen makeover, an extra-small Spanx and a sports car for her to lie on.

All this just to put her mom on a dating site, as she's newly single. Hmmmm. I won't comment on the newly single part, but I agree with moms: It was way too much makeup for a 60-year-old. Kandi reminds her mom to use condoms.

Minnesota’s most eligible bachelor is off the market. Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer proposed to his girlfriend, Maddie Bisanz, over the weekend. "A place that is special to both of us," Mauer said Sunday from Florida. "We couldn't be happier, and we're both really excited."

Mauer and Bisanz both attended Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul. Mauer graduated from Cretin in 2001 and was drafted by the Twins with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft that same year. No wedding date has been set. The couple have been friends for about seven years and have been dating for about 1-1/2 years.

Ramie Grimmer Is Dead, Rachelle Grimmer Daughter Died Of Wound, Girl Who Predicted Her Death On Facebook, Dies Of Wounds: (REUTERS) A 12-year-old girl who was shot by her mother during a standoff inside a Texas food stamp office died of her wounds late Wednesday night, officials said Thursday. Ramie Grimmer had posted a Facebook message on Monday "may die 2today" after her mother, Rachelle Grimmer, 38, took a supervisor hostage in the Texas Department of Human Services office in the Rio Grande city of Laredo in a dispute over her denial of food stamp benefits.

Rachelle Grimmer released the supervisor, but after a seven hour standoff, police say she shot Ramie and her ten-year-old son Timothy Grimmer, and then killed herself. Timothy remains in very critical condition in a San Antonio hospital, according to Mary Walker, spokeswoman for Child Protective Services.

State and local officials said Rachelle Grimmer was a troubled woman wandering with her children from residence to residence after moving to Texas from Zanesville Ohio in March. At one point, the three lived in a tent on the beach near Corpus Christi. Neighbors in Laredo said the children were often seen begging for food while living in a crumbling recreational vehicle which didn't have a place to cook food.

Officials said Texas Child Protective Services had been asked to look into the status of the children while they were living on the beach, but determined there were no signs of abuse or neglect and closed the case.

Laredo police said the Grimmers lived in at least four different places during their brief time in the city.

Abducted Megumi Yokota Is Still Alive In North Korea

A Japanese woman famously kidnapped more than three decades ago by North Korea at the age of 13 is still alive, according to new reports. Photographs are on display of Yokota’s life after her 1977 abduction by North Korean spies, as she grew from a teenager into an adult imprisoned behind the reclusive regime’s wall of secrecy.

According to a website "the Mainichi Daily News, the Japanese government obtained data on Pyongyang residents nearly a year ago that included information related to a woman whose birthday and other attributes were identical to those of Japanese abductee Megumi Yokota, government and ruling coalition sources said Thursday.

In 2002, North Korea admitted that she and others had been abducted, but claimed that she had committed suicide on March 13, 1994. However, Park Sun-young, a member of South Korea's opposition Liberty Forward Party, told media that a North Korean defector has made a videotaped testimony confirming that Ms Yokota is still alive.

Just few days ago, a South Korean magazine, Weekly Chosun, stated that a 2005 directory of Pyongyang residents listed a woman, named Kim Eun Gong, with the same birth date as Yokota. The directory gave Kim's spouse's name as Kim Yong Nam, a South Korean abductee who was previously reported to have married Yokota.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda intends to demand that North Korea reinvestigate the whereabouts of abductees who Pyongyang says have died or never entered the country, including Yokota, the sources said.

The Hollywood Foreign Press has just announced that Rainey Qualley, the daughter of Andie MacDowell, will be the 2012 Miss Golden Globe. The Associated Press reported Rainey Qualley was chosen to be 2012’s Miss Golden Globe by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association on Thursday.

Miss Golden Globe is traditionally the child of a celebrity who is invited to assist during the awards ceremony. Previous honorees include Rumer Willis, Laura Dern, Melanie Griffith and Joely Fisher.

"I am honored to be selected as the 2012 Miss Golden Globe," Qualley said at a news conference at Cecconi's restaurant. "It's very exciting to be a part of an awards show like the Golden Globes so early on in my career." 53-years old Andie wore a smart navy blue dress, which came just above the knee, her daughters went slightly higher with their hemlines showing off their pristine pins.

President of the Hollywood Foreign Press, Dr. Aida Takla-O’Reilly, made the announcement. Takla-O’Reilly said, “We are delighted that this year’s Miss Golden Globe is Rainey. She is a talented and beautiful young woman. We’re excited to have her as part of this year’s show.”

Mindy McCready Custody Battle: Singer's 5-Year-Old Son Taken By Authorities

The missing five-year-old son of country singer Mindy McCready was found hiding in a closet with his mother in Arkansas, Deputy U.S. Marshall David Rahbany said on Saturday.

Earlier Friday, Mindy McCready's ex spoke out about his fear for the safety of their 5-year-old son, Zander, after she failed to take him home after picking him up from his grandfather's for a visit. Around 8 p.m. Friday, police took her son, Zander, from his mother at a lake home owned by McCready's boyfriend in Heber Springs, Arkansas, according to the Cleburne County Sheriff.

Florida Department of Children and Families spokeswoman Terri Durdaller said in an email Friday night that her agency was working with Arkansas state officials to bring the boy back to his legal guardian in Florida, his maternal grandmother. Officials say he's safe and in good health. The troubled artist - who is pregnant with twins - had openly refused this week to return five-year old Zander to the care of her mother in Florida, claiming she was set on protecting the child, even if it resulted in jail time.

Until recently, the boy has been living with Mindy McCready's mother and stepfather, Gayle and Michael Inge, who have legal custody. The singer, who has fought a public battle against drug addiction, has visitation rights.

Rahbany, the chief deputy U.S. marshal for eastern Arkansas, said officials believed that McCready, 36, and Zander might be at the home of her boyfriend David Wilson in Heber Springs. Gayle Inge, Zander's grandmother and McCready's mother, was tearful when she talked about the news by phone Friday night with The Associated Press.

"I'm real excited that he's safe," she said. "But I can't explain what this is like. We feel for Mindy and we feel for Zander." McCready has spent the past few years turning her life around, and she's been fighting for custody of her son.

Pakistani model and actor Veena Malik defended on Saturday her front cover photos for men’s magazine FHM, where she appeared with ISI tattooed on her arm, but denied the photo shoot involved any nudity.

“In India everything is referred to ISI (Pakistan’s spy agency Inter Services Intelligence)”, she told Geo TV. “Even if a very small thing happens, they say ISI is behind it. Everybody blames ISI for everything.”

Malik said the original idea had been Kabeer Sharma’s, editor of FHM’s Indian edition, but that the photos had been “morphed”. “He told me that (the tattoo) will be very bold and will cover the upper portion of the body, which it did not.

“I agreed to a photo shoot and having an ISI tattoo in a humorous way but I did not have any nude photos. My pictures have been morphed,” said Malik. “They have the videos of the shoot but it would be in clothes and not without clothes,” the actress said.

Also speaking to Geo, Sharma said Malik had been “very excited for this shoot” and the tattoo by the makeup artist had been “in very thin font, but (Malik) asked to make a bold tattoo of ISI”.

Dita Von Teese Sizzles In 1950s Inspired Lingerie Line

Dita Von Teese has revealed the first look of her Von Follies lingerie line, which goes on sale in 2012. The DailyMail reports that Dita Von Teese Wonderbra line is a mix of vintage underwear with shapes from the 1950s and fabrics from the 1940s.

The 29-year-old Michigan native, who is also famous for her former marriage to shock rocker Marilyn Manson, plans to launch her Von Follies collection at Target department stories in Australia in February 2012. The collection, which includes high-waisted briefs, garter belts and fitted corselettes, is expected to subsequently go global.

According to SMH, Dita Von Teese’s new line of lingerie will be available from Target stores in Australia in February 2012. (You can also shop on their online store.) The Von Follies by Dita Von Teese collection will hit 172 Target stores across Australia, with additional pieces appearing in the spring.

"There are so many vintage lingerie pieces I love that I haven't been able to find in all my years of collecting," she said. "I wanted to design pieces that are tributes to my vintage obsessions, to make them beautiful and functional, while modernising them for everyday wear."

Online footage of the incident involving news anchor Tatyana Limanova went viral in both Russia and the West causing REN TV, her employer, huge embarrassment. Russian TV anchor and award-winning journalist Tatiana Limanova was recently taken off the air after giving the finger following the mention of U.S. President Barack Obama's name in a live newscast.

Award-winning REN TV presenter Tatiana Limanova allegedly made the gesture while reading Obama's name during a Nov 14 news item on the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference. Online footage of the incident has since gone viral.

She was looking down as she spoke about how Russian president Dmitry Medvedev would be assuming the head of the conference as part of the rotating chairmanship. "This does not diminish her guilt and cannot be considered an excuse. The REN-TV management views this action as the gravest violation of on-air discipline and a demonstration of unprofessionalism," the channel said, according to RIA Novosti.

"On 14 November during the 'News 24' programme the presenter Limanova made an unacceptable gesture that was a synonym for an offensive expression," it said in a statement. Given the timing of the segment, Ms Limanova may have thought that she was off camera when she 'flipped the bird', considering there was a cut-away video segment shortly following her move.

The spokesman said Limanova thought she was reading the news off-screen by the time she raised the finger, according to Reuters, which noted that it is uncertain if the anchor's duties would change after the incident. The channel, which is broadcast to 120 million people, claimed the gesture was intended for her colleagues in the studio rather than for President Obama.

After forgetting a few words and having to pause early in her performance, the singer recovered and got a nice ovation. An estimated 50 million viewers were watching as country crooner McCreery was revealed to be lip-syncing at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.

Late Wednesday, Miley posted a video on the web of her song "Liberty Walk," featuring news footage of the Occupy movement that has spread from Wall Street to city streets and parks around the world.

The video clip went viral last night, as Miley's "Liberty Walk" is played over shots from the movement, all preceded by the words: This is dedicated to the thousands of people who are standing up for what they believe in.

Conrad Murray prosecutors seek four-year sentence

Prosecutors have asked a judge to sentence Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's former doctor, to the maximum four years in prison for his involuntary manslaughter conviction in the singer's 2009 death.

In a separate court filing, defense attorneys for Dr. Conrad Murray, 58, sought to convince Los Angeles trial judge Michael Pastor to sentence their client to probation.

"A person's medical or mental health status in the Los Angeles County Jail is protected under the law," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore tells E! News. But while there was no official comment on Murray's condition by his jailers, the doctor's team is not holding back.

Prosecutors David Walgren and Deborah Brazil wrote that Murray has shown no remorse for Jackson's death and has placed blame on others, including Jackson himself. In a sentencing memorandum delivered to Judge Michael Pastor in advance of a 29 November hearing, Mr Walgren said Murray had shown no remorse for Jackson's death.

Prosecutors David Walgren and Deborah Brazil wrote that Murray has shown no remorse for Jackson's death and has placed blame on others, including Jackson himself.

Ever since Megyn Kelly told Bill O'Reilly on Monday night that the UC-Davis protestors really were doused with a "food product," the Internet has lambasted the Fox News anchor for comparing pepper spray to something you might enjoy on Thanksgiving.

Thankfully for Fox fans, the host has since come to her conservative senses, appearing on Bill O’Reilly’s The O’Reilly Factor to discuss the controversial incident last weekend when more than a dozen UC Davis students were pepper sprayed during an Occupy protes. She said of the substance, “it’s like a derivative of real pepper. It’s a food product essentially.”

As Kelly later noted, the incident sent several people to the hospital and caused the school to place Lt. John Pike, another officer and UC Davis police chief Annette Spicuzza on administrative leave. Black Friday Occupied By Protesters Hitting Big Retailers Where It 'Hurts'

A segment of the Occupy movement plans to disrupt Black Friday by occupying some of the biggest countrywide retailers to demonstrate economic solidarity. Some don't want people to shop at all. Others just want to divert shoppers from big chains and giant shopping malls to local mom-and-pops.

This week the protesters will occupy parking lots rather than campuses and Zuccotti Park, in hopes of pushing consumers away from shopping malls and big changes, towards local, small businesses, the Associated Press reported. Some will even encourage people to not shop at all this Black Friday.

According to the Stop Black Friday website, the demonstrations will specifically target companies with many revenue, companies that are publicly traded, and companies that traditionally make huge profits every year on Black Friday. Nearly each one promises some kind of surprise action on the day after Thanksgiving, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season.

In Seattle, protesters are carpooling to Wal-Mart stores to protest with other Occupy groups from around Washington state. Washington, D.C., is offering a "really, really free market," where people can donate items they don't want so others can go gift shopping for free.

Although "Occupy Black Friday" is not meant to be an anti-capitalist movement, according to the group's website, supporters of Liberate Philadelphia/Liberate America claim that the entire "Occupy Wall Street" movement is not in support of a free market. The idea behind the protests is to definitively affect corporations, because the large corporations are the ones able to afford lobbyists, bigger campaign donations, and end up influencing American politics in ways that are not always positive.

Saleh is the fourth Arab leader toppled in the wave of Arab Spring uprisings this year, after longtime dictators fell in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. The deal gives Saleh immunity from prosecution – contradicting one key demand of Yemen's opposition protesters.

"This disagreement for the last 10 months has had a big impact on Yemen in the realms of culture, development, politics, which led to a threat to national unity and destroyed what has been built in past years," he said. Before the deal's signing, a presidential source said Saleh would remain permanently in Saudi Arabia after he signed it.

Another Yemeni government official said it was unclear what Saleh would do. After signing the deal, Saleh said his government welcomes the partnership with what he called the "brothers in the opposition" and pledged a "real partnership" with them.

Kris Humphries Suing 'FAT ASS' Kim Kardashian for $10 Million

Reports are surfacing the Kris Humphries had been treating his wife of 72 days like dirt, and is now planning on suing her for $10 million. According to U.S. magazine, the breakdown of the relationship was in fact down to Kris Humphries and his mean behaviour.

It has been claimed that the 26-year-old former New Jersey Nets player not only neglected his new wife, but he made a series of derogatory comments and is accused of referring to Kim’s famous sizable derriere as ‘fat ass.’ Us Weekly also reports that the 26-year-old was brutal with his comments towards his new wife and insulted her constantly.

A source told the magazine: ‘He belittled her in front of people. He'd call her stupid. It was truly sickening. The source adds that Humphries resented his wife’s fame and fortune. “He tried to control Kim by bringing her down…He would say truly terrible things. One time, he said she had no talent and her fame wouldn’t last.”

Iraq war veteran J.R. Martinez has been crowned this season's winner on 'Dancing with the Stars,' capping weeks near the top of the leader board on the popular ballroom dancing show. J.R. Martinez ended a storybook chapter to ABC's Dancing With the Stars by hoisting the show's mirrorball trophy in victory following Tuesday night's finale.

Rob Kardashian led the scoreboard after Monday's performance show, but there was still a long road for the three finalists before claiming the mirror ball trophy. Popular with viewers despite receiving less judges points than early front-runner Ricki Lake, J.R. walked away with the hideous-yet-highly-coveted Mirror Ball Trophy.

Congratulations to JR Martinez and Karina Smirnoff for winning Season 11 of “Dancing With the Stars,” narrowly beating Rob Kardashian and his partner Cheryl Burke. “First and foremost, I want to thank everyone who voted for us for 10 weeks,” Martinez said.
