President Barack Obama made a pointed address to the nation Monday about the increasingly dire debt crisis.

"Do you know what people are fed up with most of all? They’re fed up with a town where ‘compromise’ has become a dirty word," said Obama.

We can’t allow the American people to become collateral damage to Washington’s political warfare.”Obama called on American lawmakers to put politics aside to reach a deal on a “balanced approach” after Republicans and Democrats attacked each others’ plans for the lifting of the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt ceiling. John Boehner said separately he’s made a “sincere effort” to work with Obama on a plan to raise the debt limit, adding the president created the “crisis atmosphere” surrounding the issue. These people outside Washington are … citizens. Judging by the polls, most of us have opinions about whether, and under what conditions, the debt ceiling should be raised. We don’t seem to be as ignorant as Obama thinks we are of the term or concept of a debt ceiling. But the president assumes we’ve never bothered our pretty little heads about such a thing.”

"The House speaker did say the U.S. cannot default. He said the crisis would be over if the Senate approves a new House Republican plan to be voted on in the House this week, and if the president signs it.

CBS News' Jill Jackson wrote in a tweet that as Boehner left the Capitol he was overheard saying, "I didn't sign up for going mano-a-mano with the President of the United States."The White House also objected to Boehner’s plan, urging the House to take up Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s package instead. Obama is scheduled to speak at 9 p.m. Monday night and Boehner plans to give a response. And to that end, he invoked presidents from Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush to Bill Clinton, all of whom raised the debt ceiling and tried to deal with deficit spending by working across party lines.Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on the floor Monday that the plan had sign off from Reid during marathon negotiations over the weekend, but it was shot down by President Barack Obama Sunday night. But Reid denied that was the case, saying Republicans continued to insist on a short-term debt-ceiling hike, which he strongly opposed.
